The 2024 World Aquatics Championship took place in Doha, Qatar, from February 2nd to 18th. Portugal’s performance in this year’s edition was noteworthy, as the country secured three medals and four more diplomas, marking its best appearance ever in the World Aquatics Championship. With their impressive display of skill and talent, Portugal has undoubtedly made a mark in the world of aquatic sports and in its own sporting history.
The main contributor to this outstanding result was athlete Diogo Ribeiro, who alone won two gold medals. His first medal came in the 50-metre butterfly event with a time of 22.97 seconds. The podium was completed by American swimmer Michael Andrew (23.07 seconds) and Australian swimmer Camaron McEvoy (23.08 seconds).
His second gold medal was also in the butterfly style, this time in the 100-metre event, where he reached gold with a time of 51.17 seconds, setting a new national record for the event. In second place was Simon Bucher, an athlete from Austria, with a time of 51.28 seconds, and completing the podium was Polish swimmer Jakob Majerski with 51.22 seconds.
Diogo Ribeiro became a two-time world champion for Portugal, a remarkable achievement considering Portugal's history in swimming events over the last decades, where they had never reached any gold medals. In the 2024 edition, Portugal secured two of them.
The 100-metre butterfly is an Olympic event, and at this moment, Diogo Ribeiro is a serious candidate for an Olympic medal, another historical achievement for Portuguese swimming.
The other medal was won by Angélica André in the 10 kilometres Open Water Swimming, where she secured the bronze medal with a time of 1 hour 57 minutes 28.2 seconds. The winner was Sharon van Rouwendaal from New Zealand (1 hour 57 minutes 26.8 seconds), and Spanish swimmer Maria de Valdes took second place (1 hour 57 minutes 26.9 seconds). This bronze medal was Portugal's first in the World Championship in open waters.
Following this achievement, Angélica André has secured her spot in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, and we extend our sincerest wishes for her success in the upcoming Olympic competition.
Portugal has achieved its best results, indicating that the country is heavily investing in its talent. This investment in sports has enabled Portugal to achieve prime results and is a testament to the country's commitment to building an elite group of athletes.
