Portugal Ranks 4th in the Global Peace Index 2021

2 July 2021

The Institute for Economics & Peace launched in June the new edition of the Global Peace Index 2021 “which ranks 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peacefulness”.

Following Iceland, New Zealand and Denmark, Portugal has a “Very High” mark in the safety category, ranking 4th in the Index, followed by Slovenia. In fact, Europe holds the largest number of countries in the top ten.

The Global Peace Index (GPI) “measures more than just the presence or absence of war. It captures the absence of violence or the fear of violence across three domains: Safety and Security, Ongoing Conflict, and Militarisation.”

Portugal is one of the safest countries in the world and, according to the Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Eduardo Cabrita, "in 2020, Portugal registered the lowest crime rates since the current registration model was implemented, more than 30 years ago. And it is important to recall that this was attained during a year as difficult as this, with the pandemic, which in many countries led to a rise in conflict and the rise in some types of crime".

Portugal has been in the top 5 countries for the past five years and will hopefully retain its high position in the years to come.
