Here is a calendar of 2025 highlighting the public holidays for better visibility:

Carnival (Carnaval in Portuguese) is an optional holiday observed in February, falling on a Tuesday. While not a public holiday, it is often granted as a day off depending on local regulations and company policies.

Municipal holidays vary by region and often coincide with local festivals celebrating patron saints. In June, the country celebrates the Santos Populares, or Popular Saints, with many cities and councils designating these festivities as public municipal holidays. Lisbon celebrates Saint Anthony* (Santo António in Portuguese) on 13th June, Porto commemorates Saint John** (São João in Portuguese) on 24th June, and Sintra celebrates Saint Peter*** (São Pedro in Portuguese) on 29th June.

These municipal holidays fill the streets with joy and celebration. Every corner offers traditional food and drinks, accompanied by the lively sounds of Portuguese popular music. The streets come alive, adorned with vibrant decorations, creating a festive atmosphere.

Following the June celebrations, villages and towns across Portugal host festivals dedicated to their patron saints throughout the summer, which lasts until September. Originally rooted in the Catholic tradition, these events transformed into vibrant social gatherings where families, friends, and neighbours come together to enjoy quality time in a warm and festive atmosphere.

For anyone looking to experience Portuguese culture fully, these holidays and festivals are a gateway to the country's way of life.
