On the other hand, if the applicant intends to stay in Portugal for more than 12 months and establish residency, the D8 Visa, or Residence Visa for Digital Nomads, presents the ideal solution. This visa offers the possibility of acquiring a residence permit in Portugal.

The D8 Visa process involves two key steps:

• Firstly, the Residence Visa is acquired at the Consulate or Portuguese Embassy in the applicant's country of legal residence. This visa, valid for 120 days, acts as the entry permit for Portugal. 
• Secondly, the Residence Permit is secured in Portugal through the Immigration Authorities. This permit affirms legal residency in Portugal, with the initial permit issued for a two-year period, followed by renewals lasting three years. After five years of legal residency in Portugal, the option to apply for permanent residence or Portuguese citizenship arises, subject to passing a Portuguese language exam.

When applying for Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa, the necessary documents include:

• For employees: Employment contract or employer’s declaration of employment.
• For self-employed individuals: Company contract, service agreement, or documentation verifying services provided to one or more entities.
• Moreover, all applicants must provide:

1. Evidence of average monthly income for the past three months, equivalent to at least four times the Portuguese minimum wage (€3,280.00 currently).
2. Proof of tax residency.
3. Confirmation that remote work is feasible, supported by a contract or agreement with a remote work clause, accompanied by an employer's endorsement of remote work from Portugal.
