New Opportunities: How Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa Can Change Your Work Life

Sep 18, 2024

Portugal has long been renowned as an idyllic retirement destination, featuring favourable weather conditions, affordability, and breathtaking natural landscapes. Interestingly, these same qualities are now drawing a different crowd: young professionals starting their careers. Portugal is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live, not just for its climate and cost of living, but also for its modern infrastructure and widespread internet access.

The pandemic has reshaped our lives, showing that many tasks can be done from home without the need for a traditional office. Working remotely offers benefits like avoiding long commutes, endless traffic jams, and having more quality time with loved ones. This shift has led people worldwide to rethink their lifestyles and careers, resulting in a growing influx of expats, digital nomads, entrepreneurs, and retirees relocating to Portugal for a more balanced life.

In light of this trend, Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa, also known as the D8 Visa, was introduced by the Portuguese government in 2022. This visa offers non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens the opportunity to pursue residency in Portugal while working remotely.

There are two distinct subtypes of the Digital Nomad Visa, dependent on the desired length of stay in the country.

For those planning a stay of less than 12 months, the Temporary Stay Visa is a suitable choice. This visa is valid for a year, enabling people to work and reside in Portugal. It is worth noting that this visa may be extended for an additional year, subject to approval by the Portuguese Immigration Authorities, known as AIMA. However, it is important to remember that this visa does not include the right to apply for a residence permit in Portugal. The application process for the Temporary Stay Visa for Digital Nomads must be initiated at the Portuguese Consulate or Embassy in the applicant's current country of legal residence.

On the other hand, if the applicant intends to stay in Portugal for more than 12 months and establish residency, the D8 Visa, or Residence Visa for Digital Nomads, presents the ideal solution. This visa offers the possibility of acquiring a residence permit in Portugal.

The D8 Visa process involves two key steps:

  • Firstly, the Residence Visa is acquired at the Consulate or Portuguese Embassy in the applicant's country of legal residence. This visa, valid for 120 days, acts as the entry permit for Portugal.
  • Secondly, the Residence Permit is secured in Portugal through the Immigration Authorities. This permit affirms legal residency in Portugal, with the initial permit issued for a two-year period, followed by renewals lasting three years. After five years of legal residency in Portugal, the option to apply for permanent residence or Portuguese citizenship arises, subject to passing a Portuguese language exam.

When applying for Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa, the necessary documents include:

  • For employees: Employment contract or employer’s declaration of employment.
  • For self-employed individuals: Company contract, service agreement, or documentation verifying services provided to one or more entities.
  • Moreover, all applicants must provide:

  1. Evidence of average monthly income for the past three months, equivalent to at least four times the Portuguese minimum wage (€3,280.00 currently).
  2. Proof of tax residency.
  3. Confirmation that remote work is feasible, supported by a contract or agreement with a remote work clause, accompanied by an employer's endorsement of remote work from Portugal.

Given Portugal's status within the European Union, acquiring Portuguese citizenship and a Portuguese passport presents many advantages. These include visa-free travel across Europe, freedom of movement among EU countries, and the right to live and work across the Union.
