Lisbon and Porto ranked in the top 2 positions for remote workers

3 March 2023

One of the Internet’s largest holiday rental metasearch engine, HomeToGo, has compiled a ranking of the best places for remote working in Europe. The list ranks more than 150 cities across Europe and takes into account important criteria such as internet speed, tourist attractions, hours of daylight, holiday accommodation prices, and the number of coworking spaces available.

Lisbon and Porto ranked in the top 2 positions of Europe’s Top Destinations for Remote Workers in 2023 and according to Travel Off Path, “It’s no surprise to see not one but two cities from Portugal on this list, as the country became one of the most popular destinations of 2022.”

Lisbon tops the list for many reasons, being some of them the “high number of tourist attractions, numerous co-working spaces at various price points, and is the sunniest capital city in mainland Europe, with over 2,800 yearly hours of sunshine”.

Portugal’s second-largest city comes in second place on the list and Travel Off Path post points out that “Porto is a favourite for remote workers for its high internet speed. Porto is not only a clean and walkable city, but there are a relatively high number of English speakers living here as well, making remote workers from English-speaking countries, such as the U.S., Canada, and The U.K., feel more at home than other cities”.

Portugal has increasingly become an attractive destination for remote workers:

  1. Affordable cost of living: Portugal is one of the most affordable countries in Western Europe, with lower costs for accommodation, food, and transportation than other European countries. This makes it an attractive option for remote workers who want to stretch their budget further.
  2. Great weather: Portugal has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers, making it an ideal destination for those who want to escape cold and harsh winters.
  3. High-quality infrastructure: Portugal has invested heavily in its infrastructure in recent years, particularly in its internet connectivity. This means that remote workers can enjoy fast and reliable internet access throughout the country, which is crucial for remote work.
  4. English-speaking population: Portugal has a high level of English proficiency, which makes it easy for remote workers to communicate with locals and integrate into the local community.
  5. Cultural and recreational opportunities: Portugal is a country with a rich culture and history, with plenty of opportunities for sightseeing, outdoor activities, and exploring its cities and towns. This makes it an attractive destination for remote workers who want to balance work with leisure.

Portugal has the ideal combination of affordability, quality of life, natural beauty, and culture, making it an idyllic destination for remote workers looking for a new place to live and work.

Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa, which came into effect on 30th October 2022, provides an additional incentive for remote workers to choose Portugal as their destination.

Portugal will hold early general elections following the rejection of the government's vote of confidence in the Assembly of the Republic on 11 March 2025. This outcome led to the resignation of the current government. The vote of confidence was opposed by nearly all opposition parties, including the Socialist Party (PS), CHEGA (far-right), Left Bloc (BE), Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), LIVRE, and the sole deputy of PAN (People-Animals-Nature), Inês Sousa Real. The only votes in favour came from the ruling coalition, the Democratic Alliance (AD) – which includes the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the People’s Party (CDS) – along with the Liberal Initiative (IL). While the official election date is yet to be confirmed, two potential dates have been suggested: May 11 or May 18, 2025. The Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, is expected to make an official announcement today. The political crisis leading to the dissolution of the government stems from allegations of a potential conflict of interest involving Prime Minister Luís Montenegro. Below is a timeline of the key developments:
