According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Portugal has seen a significant influx of digital nomads since 30th October 2022, issuing roughly 200 Visas and Residence Permits for remote workers. The majority of these come from the United States, United Kingdom, and Brazil, showcasing the growing trend of individuals seeking flexibility and mobility in their careers.
Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa offers foreign citizens the opportunity to experience the country’s stunning coastline, historical landmarks, and breathtaking natural beauty, all while working remotely or running your own business. It is the perfect opportunity to escape the daily grind and immerse yourself in one of Europe’s most charming and vibrant countries.
The idea of remote work was familiar prior to COVID-19, but the pandemic caused a shift in attitude towards it. The traditional view of work as something that must be done in an office environment has given way to a more flexible and diverse approach. In many instances, employees are now able to work from home, or from other remote locations.
A Digital Nomad is a special type of remote worker who leverages technology to work from anywhere in the world. They are individuals with jobs that are 100% remote, allowing them to move freely from one country to another, living in different places while continuing to work. The freedom and flexibility that this lifestyle offers is a key aspect of the appeal of being a Digital Nomad.
Portugal is highly regarded as an ideal destination for Digital Nomads due to its many appealing qualities:
Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa, which came into effect on 30th October 2022, provides an additional incentive for Digital Nomads to choose Portugal as their destination. The Visa allows individuals to live and work in the country, thereby enabling them to experience all that Portugal has to offer while pursuing their careers. The Portuguese Digital Nomad Visa is a great example of how countries are embracing the growing trend of remote work and the digital nomad lifestyle.
Portugal has two options for Digital Nomad Visas, differentiated by the duration of stay:
1. Temporary Stay Visa for Digital Nomads
The Temporary Stay Visa is suitable for Digital Nomads looking to stay briefly in Portugal. It is valid for up to one year and permits remote work as a self-employed freelancer or online business owner. This Visa must be obtained through the Portuguese Consulate serving the applicant’s current place of legal residence.
2. Residence Visa + Residence Permit for Digital Nomads
For Digital Nomads seeking a longer stay in Portugal (over one year), the Residence Permit is the ideal choice. The application process begins with obtaining a special Residence Visa for Digital Nomads, available at the Portuguese Consulate in the applicant’s current place of legal residency. Upon arrival in Portugal, the applicant must then apply for the Residence Permit for Digital Nomads.
This Visa allows for two entries and stay of up to 4 months. Additionally, the Visa enables the issuance of Residence Permits for immediate family members through family reunification.
For either the Temporary Stay Visa or the Residence Permit, applicants must present documentation demonstrating their average monthly income over the preceding three months, which must meet a minimum requirement equal to four minimum wages. Additionally, they must provide evidence of their employment status, such as a contract of employment or proof of self-employment as a freelancer or service provider. Lastly the applicant must present a document detailing their tax residency.
One of the significant benefits of becoming a resident in Portugal is the opportunity to apply for the Portuguese Citizenship after legally living in the country for 5 years. In addition, being a resident in Portugal opens the possibility of benefiting from the country’s
Non-Habitual Resident Tax Regime, designed to attract highly qualified professionals and entrepreneurs to the country.
